Going along the motor-way Riga - Daugavpils Ogre can be reached in 20-25 minutes coming from Riga. The distance Ogre - Riga is 37 km. Motor-way Riga - Daugavpils goes along Ogre at the banks of the river Daugava. Other motor-ways (e.g. Suntazi - Turkalne - Ogre) of minor importance lead to Ogre as well.Railway Riga - Maskava is also going through Ogre. Due to good railway connections Ogre has become a comfortably reachable suburban town to Riga.
There are three railway stations in the town - Jaunogre, Ogre and Parogre.
In general geographical location of the town is very favourable for developing business if this can be done taking into consideration resort functions of the town and environmental norms.
Referring to economic activities and specialisation functionally Ogre can be divided into five areas.
I. Industrial area.
II. Administrative, culture, sports, education, shopping and service area ("Centres").
III. Recreation areas (a cut line shows the perspective recreation areas or directions where the existing areas are planned to expand).
IV. Health care area (hospital and polyclinics).
V. Residential areas are situated among other areas.
Certainly, this division is approximate and flexible. However, it is important that industrial areas are situated in suburbs and it will not make obstacles for extension of other areas. Ogre seems able to restore its status of a resort town. Environmentally these functions should be combined with the other ones which is difficult but can be achieved.
Four local bus routes are availbale. All of them have bus-stop at the central terminal.
Industry
State joint stock company "Ogre" is one of the biggest knitwear producers in the Baltic states. It is situated at the western border of Ogre near the highway Riga - Daugavpils.The company marks its production with international quality label "Woolmark". "Ogre" produces warm and comfortable clothes for people of all ages and tastes. The use of ethnographic ornaments gives special charm and originality to the goods produced by "Ogre".
The company "Ogre" exports its productions to Italy, Spain, Sweden, Finland, Israel, Taiwan etc.
"Ogres buvplastmasa" Ltd., was founded on the basis of the state enterprise - Construction plastics plant of Ogre. The plant has been working since 1953, at first as a gavel-pit. At the end of 50's the enterprise was reorganized into a producing one.
A wilde range of technologies have been developed since then. There are three basic kinds of production - products of concrete and ferro-concrete; decorative plates for floors and walls; plastic products and different pipes etc.
The enterprise of experimental agricultural production "Meristemu Kulturas" bean its activities in 1975 by producing and selling high-quality seedlings and flowers.
Nowadays the enterprise produces seedlings of roses, carnations, chrysanthemums and even cherry.
All mentioned flowers and seedlings are selected and produced in 29 green-houses with total area of 1.2 hectars.
