Population




In 1935 there were only about 1,7 thousand permanent residents in Ogre. After annexation of Latvia to the USSR and World War II when immigration of representatives of different nationalities from the whole Soviet Union began the number of inhabitants grew and reached 7,5 thousand in 1959. In 1970 the number of inhabitants is already 15,7 thousand but in 1979 - 26,1 thousand.

The number continued growing and in 1989 it reached 30,2 thousand. With restoring independent Republic of Latvia and change in economy leading to market economy which has resulted in decrease in the rate of employment since 1990 the number of inhabitants has been decreasing - people have either emigrated of moved to find a job somewhere else.





Depopulation has begun - death rate is higher than birth rate. In 1996 there are 28262 inhabitants in Ogre. Ogre is number ten among 77 cities and towns in Latvia as regards the number of inhabitants and is proceeded by Riga, Daugavpils, Jelgava.
